What is Fat freezing or Cryolipolysis treatment?

A common question that we get asked is what is fat freezing treatment?

Fat freezing treatment is a permanent fat reduction technique that involves the process of applying cold temperatures to the skin and subcutaneous tissue whereby the fat cells are damaged and subsequently die.

These dead fat cells are then passed out through the body naturally leaving a reduced amount of subcutaneous fat cells and a new body shape. Fat freezing treatment is similar to liposuction as it creates a permanent reduction in the number of fat cells in the treated area however it is non-invasive (this skin is not punctured during treatment).

Fat freezing treatment was first clinically proven in 2008 by Dr. Manstein and a few colleagues in the US. The story suggests that they were using freezing/ cooling techniques to assist with cosmetic surgery (to reduce pain, swelling and provide improved healing) when they noticed a reduction in the fat cells.  Initial fat freezing trials were conducted on pigs and in 2009 the FDA approved fat freezing treatment as a safe and effective way to reduce subcutaneous fat.

How does fat freezing treatment work?

The clinical evidence from the trials conducted proved a 26% reduction in the fat cells on the treated area.  (The measurements were taken via ultrasound before the fat freezing treatment was conducted and then afterward to compare the size of the fat layer). Since then however improved technology (in particular a 360* cooling handle (versus only two plates laying parallel in the Coolsculpting fat freezing system) such as seen in the more efficient Clatuu and Cooltech fat freezing machines, hence there are more fat cells frozen with each treatment indicating an increase in fat cell death and increased fat freezing treatment results. This technology improvement of a larger surface area indicates a 30-40% reduction of fat cells.

Fat freezing treatment vs liposuction

Fat freezing is a safe alternative to liposuction as there is no general anaesthetic required, there are no needles, no bleeding and no fluid loss or the need to replace fluids after treatment. No bandages or sutures or tapes are required with fat freezing treatment, unlike liposuction where the cannula (needle) has been inserted through the skin. With liposuction, the fat cells are sucked out of the body, and hence the entry point of the cannula is required to be closed after treatment to close the skin wound.  Fat freezing does not pierce the skin, rather the applicator handles are placed onto the skin.

Fat freezing is permanent. The dead cells are flushed out of the body through your natural elimination process over the course of the next 4 months. A healthy diet and exercise program will allow faster processing of the dead fat cells and hence more rapid visible results, however, it is the damage that has been done during the fat freezing treatment that will determine results.
