How to lose Man Boobs

What are man boobs?

Man boobs, manboobs or moobs is a condition where men develop excess breast tissue and or have excessive fat tissue in the area causing their chest to appear more feminine. There are two common terms when describing man boobs to be aware of  - these are gynecomastia - where there is actual growth of the breast tissue or pseudogynecomastia - where there is an enlargement of the breast area due to excess fat deposit. While both of these conditions are often benign (not harmful), they can be a source of embarrassment and self-consciousness for many men. Fortunately, there are several ways to get rid of man boobs, including fat freezing.

How to get rid of man boobs?

What causes man boobs?

Before we dive into how to get rid of chest fat, it's important to understand what causes man boobs. While there are several factors that can contribute to gynecomastia, the most common cause is a hormonal imbalance between oestrogen and testosterone. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including puberty, ageing, medication use, and certain health conditions.  For pseudogynecomastia - the excessive fat cells and enlarged fat cells in the area can be due to extra body weight or simply again because of genetics. If your Dad has been forever asking how to get rid of man boobs there is possibly a genetic relationship to the way that you carry and store the fat on your chest.

Effective ways to get rid of man boobs

Whilst we specialise in fat freezing - we need to recognise the alternative treatments available to get rid of man boobs. The two most effective ways are fat freezing and liposuction.  Now let's take a look at some of the Pros and Cons of these 2 most effective ways to get rid of man boobs.

1. Fat freezing - also known as cryolipolysis and quite often called Coolsculpting (TM)  is  probably the best option for reducing man boobs due to a number of factors. The procedure involves the use of a  cooling device that freezes and destroys fat cells in the chest area. Over time, the body naturally eliminates these fat cells, resulting in a reduction in breast tissue.

Pros and Cons of Fat Freezing

  • Pro - Fat freezing is better than liposuction as there are no incisions (cuts) into your skin, there is no recovery period. You return to your normal activities on the day.  You may feel slightly uncomfortable and the area may be slightly tender however this usually only lasts a few days.

  • Pro - Fat freezing your man boobs can be a private affair.  No one needs to know that you have had treatment done. The treatment takes less than an hour and can be done during your lunch break.

  • Con - One of the limitations with fat freezing is that more than just a single treatment may be required. However, this really depends on the size of the man boobs  (ie how much fat-tissue) is in the area to start with and then your individual response to fat freezing treatment.  Most clients do see a result after a single session and only 35% of our clients return for a second session.

  • Con  - Fat freezing takes up to 3 months to see the full results.  Most men tend to see results beginning within 2-3 weeks after treatment however your body needs to identify all of the cells that have been damaged by the freezing which takes some time. So for some clients this time period of waiting to see the results can be annoying when you have had treatment to get rid of your man boobs.

2. Liposuction - Liposuction is a good treatment like fat freezing for man boobs -. Liposuction involves the use of a small, thin tube (like a hollow needle) called a cannula, which is inserted through tiny incisions (cuts) in the chest area. Depending on the size of the man boobs you may be required to undergo a general anaesthetic for this surgery, to prevent you from moving during the treatment and for pain relief.  The cannula is then vigorously moved forward and backwards to cut the fat cells off the surrounding organs, structure and tissue  and then it is used to suction out the dislodged and excessive fat and breast tissue, resulting in a flatter chest area. After treatment the area will be very tender to touch and will be swollen. There may be a haemoserous ooze (liquid) which will seep out of the incision points. You will be required to wear very restrictive compression garments after treatment to ensure that any of the dislodged fat cells that haven’t been removed from your body,  don’t adhere (stick) back in the wrong area  causing an undesired shape (particularly if allowed to drop through gravity).  The general cost for liposuction on man boobs is between  $5000 - $8000.

Pros and Cons of Liposuction

  • Pro - liposuction to get rid of man boobs - during the surgery generally all  of the tissue can be removed during this one session.

  • Pro - liposuction although you will need to wear tight undergarment for weeks after the procedure - the results are evident as soon as the swelling has gone down. Usually within 1-2 weeks.

  • Con - Liposuction for man boobs cost somewhere between $5000 - $12000 (ouch)

  • Con -The invasive nature of liposuction requires needles, anaesthetic, blood, surgery, sutures and ooze post operatively are all quite confronting. The risk of infection is present and a general anaesthetic often used.

3. As a third option but much less effective (if at all) to get rid of man boobs is always weight loss, through exercise and or diet.  Choosing specific exercises for the chest area will increase the muscle in the area and whilst this increase in muscle will increase fat-burning metabolism - this increased fat burning and therefore fat reduction occurs  throughout the whole body, thereby  - the effects and effort will show very little in just the chest area.  Same too can be said for weight loss. If there are fewer calories consumed than are used during each day - this deficit will result in a reduction of the size of all of the fat cells, however this is across the entire body and not just within the chest area. For many men asking how to get rid of man boobs the chest area is often the only area on their body that they wish to target.  Sometimes they have very little fat elsewhere on their bodies or they are well built but this excess tissue is just prominent in their chest area. So despite good exercise and diet they are unable to target fat loss in the chest area. It is important to note that an unhealthy diet may cause hormonal imbalances (testosterone and oestrogen) which in turn can cause gynecomastia (rather than pseudogynecomastia), so a change in diet could have a large impact on gynecomastia if this is the underlying cause.

Pros and Cons of Diet and Exercise

  • Pro - Improved  diet and exercise to get rid of man boobs - will give overall health improvements

  • Pro - a healthy diet (cutting out the crap) and exercise are entirely natural and can be cost free compared to any cosmetic procedures.

  • Con - If using diet and exercise alone as the tool to get rid of man boobs -  it is not very successful as spot reduction exercises do not work.

  • Con - we’ve all tried diets and exercises and well who hasn’t failed with this?

So given the lack of results of diet and specific exercises for spot reduction the most effective ways to lose man boobs is through fat freezing or liposuction.

In Summary

At Beautiful Body Clinics - Fat freezing for man boobs costs usually less than $900 for a single session whilst liposuction costs upwards of $5000. Liposuction gives immediate results (once the swelling has gone down) whilst fat freezing results are seen within 2-4 weeks but takes up to 12 weeks for the full results to show. Diet and exercise do not provide spot reduction and overall weight loss is not easy to maintain nor desired when it is just one area of the body you wish to reduce.  So if you are interested in seeing how our fat freezing could help you get rid of your man boobs, please get in contact for a free consultation in our clinic.
