What is the lymphatic system and what role does it play in fat freezing?
When we talk about fat freezing – we constantly refer to the lymphatic system so I thought a quick blog on the basics of the lymphatic system would be helpful.
We all know we have arteries and veins throughout our body – yet we don’t often talk or think about the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a network of tissues, organs and vessels that run all over the body. These all work together to help with immune response and for the absorption and movement of fluid from the interstitial space (space surrounding the tissue cells) back into the arteries and veins and around the body. Think of the lymphatic vessels being similar to veins or arteries, but they are smaller and do most of the clean up from the tissues in the body. The lymphatic system is relied upon heavily after fat freezing.
How does the fat leave your body?
After a fat freezing treatment, the fat cell sits in its normal location whilst the cell undergoes apoptosis (cell death) . The area treated becomes inflamed and undergoes a natural immune and repair response to the cold temperatures. Part of this response is the removal of the fat cell and the debris caused by the fat freezing treatment. The dead fat cell and its content is absorbed into the lymphatic vessels – whereby it travels through to the venous blood supply, into the liver. The liver processes this and then deposits the waste material (fat cell and lipid) – flushing it out of the body through the natural elimination system. (flush them down the loo).
The image attached is a great example of how the lymphatic vessels sit and operate between the arteries, veins and interstitial space – where these vessels collect the debris and other temporary cells and tissue changes caused by the inflammatory and repair response after fat freezing.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage
A gentle lymphatic massage in the days after fat freezing (soft gentle movements on the skin moving towards the heart) could possibly assist with the movement of the lymphatic fluid, however the body has an amazing ability to remove the waste naturally without the need for a massage. There is also no clinical evidence that lymphatic massage improves fat freezing results.
The use of body contouring body shapewear ( ie – Spanx) does assist with this lymphatic fluid return and movement throughout the body, however like gentle massage, it is not essential. Body contouring underwear does also provide support to the treated area which may make you feel more comfortable. As the skin can be sensitive after fat freezing treatment – the body contouring wear also can protect the skin from irritation caused by material seams rubbing against the skin.
