Visceral Fat vs Subcutaneous Fat – What Is The difference?

Visceral Fat vs Subcutaneous Fat

Today we had a client ask the question: “What is the difference between visceral fat and subcutaneous fat?” So this inspired me to write a blog and explain for everyone else out there who may also be wondering.

What Is Subcutaneous Fat

The subcutaneous layer of fat is the jiggly fat you can see just under the skin which visibly grows as we put on weight. It lies between the skin and the superficial fascia (a thick strong connective tissue that wraps over the top of muscles and bones).

Underneath this subcutaneous fat layer is the abdominal muscle wall, which is covered by a strong thin layer of the superficial fascia.  On a very lean person – where there is no subcutaneous fat – the abdominal muscles are visible and you can see the ‘six pack’. Lean people still have fat cells in the subcutaneous area, however these fat cells are so very small that it is still possible to see the muscle structure underneath. For those of us with ‘normal weight + some’, our muscles are still there but aren’t visible because the subcutaneous layer of fat cells is thicker.

How To Lose Subcutaneous Fat

The reason that fat freezing is so safe is because it only freezes the subcutaneous layer of fat so the organs inside your belly – your bowel, small intestines, stomach, pancreas, liver, kidneys, bladder and uterus – are protected by this layer of abdominal muscle. These organs are not drawn into the handle and frozen. They stay well protected behind the superficial fascia and the abdominal muscle wall.

What Is Visceral Fat

Visceral fat is the term given to the internal fat that is deep inside your body surrounding your internal organs. Small amounts of visceral fat are important for your overall health however excess visceral fat can pose serious health risks because of the increased pressure it puts on your internal organs.

At Beautiful Body Clinics – Fat Freezing Melbourne Clinic – we can only treat the subcutaneous fat through our fat freezing treatments, not visceral fat. However we strongly encourage a healthy diet and exercise program to keep within a healthy weight range . A healthy weight range indicates a healthy level of visceral fat.
