Light bulb moment - Social pressure to be beautiful

Some of you may be aware that I am writing a book, (working title “Muffin Top”)

This book has been inspired by the hundreds of conversations and research surveys that I have had with women who have come to me for fat freezing in Melbourne.

One such conversation occurred last week with a (former) stranger (she was my Uber driver) now a potential client, who was so typical of my fat freezing Melbourne clients when it comes to criticism of other women and their choices regarding beauty.

She said “I always think why would you do the “trout pout” to your face?” referring to the women who have lip fillers, as she pushed her lips forward. As part of my discovery of women and body image and acceptance, I said, “Yes, I used to think like that too, but we all have different perceptions of beauty and how we want to look. At some level, we all conform to societal expectations and want to be seen as beautiful, I know I do. So I ask myself, if that is what she (the trout pout) does to feel beautiful, who am I to say it is wrong?

I then explained the following concept from my book.

“At some level, we are all trying to be beautiful, or normal or just accepted. If its wearing the latest fashion (or like me, fashion from 3 years ago) or dying our hair (where did those silver sparkly ones come from?), aren’t we changing ourselves to fit in, be accepted, is that any different to changing ourselves to be seen as “beautiful”?

The moment we apply mascara, pluck our eyebrows, brush our hair, we are changing our natural state and why? If we shave under our arms (or for men shave their face), if we wear deodorant, isn’t this conforming to society’s expectations on some level? If we change anything about our body from its’ natural state, isn’t this conforming to societal expectations?

So, I ask myself, who am I to judge anyone for doing what they want to their body to feel beautiful, normal, accepted, when I do what I choose to feel beautiful, normal or accepted. My level of doing (changing my natural state) may not be lip fillers (yet) will be different from others, it may be more than some, or it may be less, but I am doing something none the less.
Her response was awesome.

“OMG that is a light bulb moment for me, I have never thought about it like that, that changes everything…… I have curled my hair this morning to be beautiful, to conform to society, to follow fashion, so I am really no different to them (the trout pouts). Wow, who am I to criticise others?”

This was a great moment in realising the value of my research and the value that everyone of our beautiful clients give to us by sharing their thoughts and experiences. Although we are performing fat freezing, we also assist people make the changes within. We really encourage acceptance, acceptance of others and acceptance of self, even if you get a little help.

Be Beautiful,
Linda
